Phera Ceremony

Phera, Indian wedding ceremony, binds the couple together for eternity. Therefore, it is a crucial ritual to solemnize the wedding, creating a union between the bride and groom.

In the tapestry of Hindu wedding rituals, Pheras hold a pivotal role, granting the status of husband and wife to the couple. This significant ceremony typically takes place at an auspicious time chosen by the pandit, often during the evening or midnight, and is approximately 3-4 hours long. A designated priest conducts the ceremony, chanting mantras in Sanskrit.

Pheras take place in front of a small havankund with a sacred fire. The bride’s dupatta or a small edge of her saree is symbolically tied to the groom’s robe. Then together, they move around the fire-lit havankund, completing the Phera ceremony. The significance of the ceremony lies in the couple’s seven rounds, symbolizing togetherness for seven lifetimes in Hindu tradition. Also, fire, or agni, considered the purest element in nature, is integral to these ceremonies.

Additionally, the age-old Indian tradition of Phera ceremony has various ceremonial elements like roli, moli, chandan, kumkum, rice, fruits, supari, and sindoor. The groom often uses a silver coin for the maang bharna ceremony. During the Phera ceremony, the bride and groom make vows, pledging to take their lives towards happiness and prosperity together.

The timeless ritual of Pheras has the essence of commitment and eternal togetherness. So, it unites couples in a bond that transcends time and space.

The game involves looking for a ring in a bowl filled with raw milk with fragrant rose petals. The bowl, usually a silver one, becomes the centerpiece for this challenge. The gold ring hidden within the milk makes the bride and groom dip their hands into the milk and compete to be the first to find the ring. The game is repeated several times, with the excitement building as the participants eagerly try to outdo each other.

As the game concludes, marking the end of the Juaa-Juee session, the moment of dulhan vidai follows. This signifies the bride saying bye to her parents’ home and starting the journey to her husband’s home, ending the wedding on a sweet and playful note.
